A reflection on sacred music, spiritual attunement, and the living presence of the Ascended Masters

In the Teachings of the Ascended Masters®, music is more than sound. Sacred music can become a doorway of attunement, a way for the heart and soul to draw closer to the radiation of a master, an archangel, a retreat, or a divine quality of God.

The Summit Lighthouse® Encyclopedia explains that a keynote is “that aspect of music of the spheres” connected with the soul’s divine blueprint and frequency. It also teaches that the keynotes of the Ascended Masters are the music that emanates from their auras, and that when we sing or listen to a master’s keynote, we may attune with that master’s presence.

Music as a Spiritual Bridge

The document Keynotes according to The Masters and Their Retreats lists many musical compositions associated with specific Ascended Masters, archangels, cosmic beings, and retreats. It references The Masters and Their Retreats by Mark L. Prophet and Elizabeth Clare Prophet as the source for these keynotes.

These keynotes are not presented simply as beautiful music. They are understood as a means of spiritual contact, meditation, and attunement. Through them, students may enter more deeply into the radiation of a master or the flame anchored in a retreat.

For example, Gautama Buddha’s keynote is “Moonlight and Roses,” and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” also gives direct attunement with the Lord of the World. The radiance of Jesus can be drawn through his keynote, “Joy to the World.”

The Masters and Their Musical Keynotes

Many students of the teachings have experienced that certain music carries a recognizable spiritual atmosphere. The keynotes help us understand why. A melody may open the heart to devotion, protection, healing, illumination, purity, freedom, or divine love.

The list includes beautiful examples:

Paul the Venetian’s keynote is “I Love You Truly,” a fitting expression of the third ray of divine love, beauty, and creativity.

Nada’s keynote is “Mattinata,” also known as ’Tis the Day, by Ruggiero Leoncavallo.

Lanello’s keynote is “Greensleeves,” a melody associated with his first-ray service and devotion.

El Morya’s keynote is “Pomp and Circumstance,” and the same reference notes his flowers as the blue rose and forget-me-not and his fragrance as sandalwood.

Each of these compositions offers a unique point of meditation. The music can help prepare the heart before prayer, study, decrees, or quiet reflection.

Keynotes of the Archangels

The keynotes also include music connected with the archangels and angelic hosts.

Archangel Raphael’s keynote is “Whispering Hope,” by Alice Hawthorne, and the document also notes that the music of Handel’s Messiah was inspired upon Handel by Raphael.

Archangel Gabriel’s energy is focused through the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni.

The Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin may be used to invoke the radiance of Archangel Michael and Faith and the angelic hosts.

The document also lists “The Navy Hymn,” also known as Eternal Father, Strong to Save, as a keynote of Archangel Michael.

These musical keynotes can become part of a sacred atmosphere in the home, in meditation, or in preparation for service.

Music, Freedom, and the Flame of God

Some keynotes carry a powerful momentum of freedom and spiritual strength. One of the most striking examples is Sanat Kumara’s keynote, “Finlandia,” by Jan Sibelius. The reference notes that this music releases such a powerful flame of freedom that, during the Nazi occupation, its playing was forbidden because it could arouse the fervor of the people for freedom.

This reminds us that music can carry more than beauty. It can carry courage, remembrance, spiritual identity, and the power of divine purpose.

Another example is Holy Amethyst, whose musical keynote is “The Beautiful Blue Danube” by Johann Strauss, Jr. For those who love the violet flame and the service of Saint Germain, music connected with Holy Amethyst can be a beautiful support for meditation on transmutation, mercy, and spiritual refinement.

The Keynotes of Retreats

The list also includes keynotes of spiritual retreats.

The Royal Teton Retreat is associated with “Song to the Evening Star” from Tannhäuser by Wagner. The same music may accompany meditation on Lord Lanto’s golden lotus flame.

The Ascension Flame is associated with the Triumphal March from Aïda, and the keynote of Serapis Bey’s Ascension Retreat is “Liebestraum” by Franz Liszt.

The Rakoczy Mansion and the Temple of the Maltese Cross are associated with “Tales from the Vienna Woods” by Johann Strauss, Jr.

And the Temple of Faith and Protection, the retreat of Archangel Michael and Faith, has as its keynote the “Soldiers’ Chorus” from Faust by Charles Gounod.

These keynotes invite us to consider music as a way of entering a sacred current of consciousness.

How to Use Keynotes in Spiritual Practice

Listening to a keynote can be simple and devotional.

You may choose one master, archangel, or retreat you feel drawn to and listen prayerfully to the keynote associated with that being or place of light. Before listening, you can offer a short prayer:

Beloved Presence of God, beloved Ascended Masters and angels of light, help me to attune my heart to the divine qualities carried through this music. May my soul receive only that which is of God, for the blessing of my life and service.

Then listen quietly. Let the music soften the heart, refine the thoughts, and raise the consciousness. You may follow the music with prayer, decrees, scripture, journaling, or silent meditation.

The keynotes of the Ascended Masters remind us that God can speak through beauty. Music can become a vessel of light, a bridge between heaven and earth, and a gentle way for the soul to remember its divine origin.
